Zohran Mamdani states his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his victory in November.
"My choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of focusing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he came from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
