The movie, though, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

For years, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this identical story instead of debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged him to accept the role. The position was in essence a casting call with no shortage of candidates. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who studied his rise, the future president merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer familiar with the events stated the key criterion was controllability and faithfulness, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in field operations.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by the actor's debut as James Bond. His harder interpretation led local outlets and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with his appeared on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
