New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to back former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to appear with the former governor in areas where he holds strong support.
“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams stated.
Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.
In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
