A budget proposal that would conclude the record-setting federal closure in US history is advancing toward the House of Representatives for a critical decision on the coming day.

On the sixth week of the legislative standoff, lawmakers are coming back to Washington to decide whether to approve a Senate package that would support government departments for the next eight weeks.

Republican leadership voiced optimism the funding measure would be approved by the lower chamber, notwithstanding their slim advantage. But leading opposition members vowed to oppose it.

Opposition chief Hakeem Jeffries of his constituency pledged to oppose the legislation.

The minority representative has shown irritation with Democratic senators who sided with Republicans on the previous evening to pass the budget proposal.

Major Points

A primary requirement of Democrats during the closure has been that GOP lawmakers attach to the funding package a measure to extend tax credits that make healthcare more affordable for a significant population.

But GOP members maintained solidarity and declined to compromise, agreeing only to allow a decision before year-end on the medical assistance, something they had offered previously.

And there is uncertainty that measure will get through the Senate, while the presiding officer has not yet promised a ballot for the subsidies in that chamber.

Voting Calculations

The Speaker has kept the House out of session for 53 days to pile pressure on Senate Democrats to settle the impasse.
