Food Benefits Expected to Cease for 41 Million Amid Ongoing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities announced recently that SNAP funds through a critical national welfare initiatives are not going out in November because of the continuing government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse was in its 25th day when the announcement was made, coming after appeals by more than two hundred House Democrats pushing the department to access emergency reserves to cover November's food assistance.

“The reality is, the well has run dry,” officials announced. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” on 1 November.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people count on these monthly payments, per federal data. In certain states, such as one southwestern state, dependence on this assistance is as high as a significant portion of citizens.

Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that the department decided against using contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Legislative Deadlock

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree about the way to finance and restart federal agencies.

A statement from the leader of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that the administration had chances to take earlier action to ensure continuous assistance.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps weeks ago to make arrangements to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to approve legislation that would resume government operations.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from multiple regions activated emergency protocols in recent days to allocate funds to address food insecurity preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping in November.
