Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze Post Diwali

On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Several parts of the city registered an air quality index over 500, which translates to 10x the recommended limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x higher than healthy limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

Yet recently, the current local leadership approached the judicial authority to request a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be used during limited hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Many recording stations throughout the capital recorded pollution peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants originating in India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

In these regions, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Economic Toll

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple studies.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to cancer.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the city.
