Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

Intense heat alerts have additionally been activated for the coming days in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure shifts to the east, bringing intense sunshine to a broad swath of the region.

Meanwhile, a region famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunlight has endured one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on record. A specific type of fog, which usually lasts for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by exceptional fall rainfall that resulted in the ground saturated.
